Why You Should Consider Hiring a Birth Photographer in Austin
If you’re on the fence about hiring a birth photographer, or maybe you’ve never even considered it, let me walk you through the decision. As a mom of three, I feel like I can guide you through this not only as a photographer but also woman to woman, mom to mom.
If you’re like me, and start reading something but can’t find the time to finish it, here’s the takeaway: Birth is an experience that is powerful, emotional, and often a little overwhelming. Many parents find that the hours surrounding their baby’s arrival pass in a blur, which is why having those moments documented can be so meaningful.
What birth photography actually captures:
When people first hear about birth photography, they often imagine only the moment of delivery, and feel like it might not be a good fit for them- they don’t want photos of baby coming out of the birth canal, and maybe cannot imagine why someone would want that. Here’s the thing, those photos are only a tiny fraction of what I can capture as a birth photographer! In reality, birth photography tells a much broader story…
It can capture:
the quiet anticipation before labor intensifies
the support of partners and birth teams
the emotional moments that unfold throughout the experience
the first time you see your baby
the first time you hold your baby
the newborn exam
So, if the photo of your baby coming out of the birth canal isn’t something you want or is something you’re uncomfortable with, there’s SO much more to document!
Moments Parents Often Miss During Birth
One of the most meaningful aspects of birth photography is capturing moments that parents may not think to take a picture of or even see in the moment: the room number, baby’s heart rate strip, mom and dad’s face when they hear it’s time to push, the way mom instinctively grabs for dad’s hand during each contraction, and baby’s tiny details. I really could go on, but you get the picture… pun intended :)
During labor, your focus is naturally inward. You may not notice your partner’s expression when they first see the baby, or the emotion in the room when your baby lets out their first cry.
As a birth photographer, I quietly documents these moments so you can experience them later—sometimes seeing parts of the story for the very first time.
And if you think ‘I’ll just have my husband take pictures, so I don’t need a birth photographer’ here a a few things to think about: if your husband is taking the photos, he won’t be in them with you; you probably want your husband to be fully present with you and not worried about having to also take photos; and, as much as we love an iPhone photo, let’s be real… the quality isn’t always great and the angles husbands capture are usually less than ideal!
Why Many Austin Families Are Choosing Birth Photography
More and more families in Austin are choosing birth photography because they want to remember this chapter of their lives in an honest and meaningful way. Many people hire a photographer for other big life moments life graduations, proposals, and weddings, so it only makes sense you’d want a photographer at another big life moment: when you meet your child for the fist time!
Birth photography is about more than the moment your baby arrives—it’s about documenting the strength, connection, and emotion that surrounds that experience.
For many families, these images become some of their most treasured photographs- just like wedding photos. They become family heirlooms, photos you look back on at every new milestone your child hits, and the pictures you want to show friends when telling your birth story.

A Documentary Approach to Birth Photography
Birth photography is different from traditional portrait family photography. Rather than directing or posing moments, I focus on being a storyteller. As an Austin birth photographer, my role is to quietly observe and preserve what naturally unfolds. In fact, many families tell me that after a short time, they hardly notice the camera in the room at all.
I typically arrive when active labor begins and stay through the newborn exam, allowing me to document the full arc of your baby’s arrival. Because I’m with you for so many hours of this experience, your final gallery becomes more than a collection of images — it becomes a visual story of the day your child entered the world.
During booking, you’ll fill out a questionnaire that helps me understand what matters most to you. But as I spend time with you during labor, I’m also quietly observing the details that make your story unique — the way your partner supports you, the atmosphere of the room, the small interactions that often go unnoticed— because they are often the ones that mean the most when you look back!
Is Birth Photography Right for Every Family?
After having one of my child’s birth photographed, I know how special the photos are! And I want everyone to have the same kind of photos to look back at. That being said, I know birth photography doesn’t feel like the right choice for every family—and that’s okay.
If you want to preserve the early days with your baby but prefer something after delivery, Fresh 48 sessions and in-home newborn sessions are wonderful alternatives! I’ll work on doing an in depth blog post on them next, but until then, my inbox is open to ANY questions to might have about them :)
Preserving the First Chapter of Your Baby’s Story
Whether you choose to welcome your baby in a hospital, birth center, or at home, I’d be a true honor to document it for you!
My role is simply to witness and preserve the story of your baby’s arrival so that you can revisit it for years to come, and have something tangible to go along with their story.
Your baby will only enter the world once. As much as birth photos are for you now, they will be for them later.
