Fresh 48 Photography in Austin, Texas

Why These First 48 Hours Matter More Than You Think

The first 48 hours after your baby is born are some of the most emotional, overwhelming, and fleeting moments you’ll ever experience. As an Austin Fresh 48 photographer (and a mom of 3), I’ve seen (and experienced) just how quickly this phase fades — and how meaningful it is to have it documented.

A Fresh 48 session takes place in your baby’s place of birth (hospital, birth center, or home) within the first day or two after your baby arrives. It captures all of those very first moments of becoming a family and the brand new baby details you’ll try to hard to etch into memory. These sessions are simple, natural, and focused on preserving what this season actually felt like — not just how it looked.

What Is a Fresh 48 Session?

A Fresh 48 session is a lifestyle newborn photography session that usually takes place within the first 24–48 hours after your baby is born here in Austin, Texas.

Unlike traditional newborn sessions, there’s minimal posing, no props, and no pressure. Instead, the focus is on documenting your baby exactly as they are in those very first hours — brand new, tiny, and still settling into the world. The reason I say “minimal posing” instead of none is because I’ll softly guide you toward the best light — offering subtle direction so your images feel both natural and beautifully intentional.

Why the First 48 Hours Are So Important

There’s something about those first hours with a brand new baby that feels and looks different from anything that comes after — and it passes so quickly.

The wrinkly skin, their squished faces, their misshapen heads, the way they curl up exactly like they did in the womb… these are the details that quietly change within hours. Babies truly look different on day one than they do just a few days later.

A Fresh 48 session preserves this brand new baby phase exactly as it was — fleeting and brand new — along with the emotions that come with it.

Real, Unrepeatable Moments

Fresh 48 sessions capture the moments you can’t recreate later — siblings meeting baby for the first time, grandparents visiting, and parents simply sitting there, taking it all in. They’re emotional and deeply real in a way that staged sessions just aren’t — and that’s what makes them so meaningful.

Why These Photos Matter Later

Years from now, fresh 48 photos are often the images parents come back to the most- they bring them back to the quiet of the hospital room, and the surreal realization of “our baby is finally here.”

These photos don’t just show what it looked like — they bring you back to exactly how it felt.

Fresh 48 vs. Birth vs. Newborn Photography

For each of my 3 kids, I chose a different type of session — and I honestly don’t have a favorite. They’re all so different and each one captured a completely unique part of their beginning. Looking back, I wish I paired at least 2 of the sessions together, because each one captures something different, and together they would have told a more complete story of those first days.

If you’re choosing 1 or 2 of these sessions consider this:

Birth photography captures the labor and arrival — the intensity, the anticipation, and so many firsts: the first cry, first kiss, first time holding your baby, and those initial moments as a family.

Fresh 48 sessions capture the first chapter after birth — the quiet hours when you begin to settle in and truly get to know your baby. If you’re drawn to a more documentary approach but prefer privacy during labor, this can be the perfect fit.

Newborn sessions capture the more polished portraits — a slightly more styled and gently posed version of your baby once you’re home. They’re still rooted in a lifestyle approach, so your gallery maintains that natural, documentary feel.

Each one captures a different part of your story — not better or worse, just different.

Timing: Booking a Fresh 48 Photographer in Austin, Texas

If you’re considering a Fresh 48 session in Austin or the surrounding cities (Georgetown, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, etc.), it’s best to book by your second or early third trimester to ensure availability.

Because these sessions take place shortly after birth, I stay on call for the weeks on either side of your due date and come to your hospital, birth center, or home once your baby has arrived and you feel ready.

If you’re planning a C-section, I typically recommend scheduling your session for the first day after your baby is born. You’ll likely still have some of the initial pain medication in your system, which can make that first day of recovery feel a bit more comfortable than the days that follow.

If you’re planning a home birth, your midwife usually comes to do an exam the day after baby is born, which makes for fun fresh 48 photos!

I’d love to document these first moments for you! Since I’m on call for Fresh 48 sessions, I only take on a limited number each month, so reach out here to reserve your due date in advance.
