What to Expect When You Hire a Birth Photographer | Birth photography in Austin, Texas

Yay, you’re pregnant!

As you begin to build your birth team, you might be wondering whether birth photography in Austin Texas is something you want to include in your plans. Maybe you know you want the moment documented, but you’re not totally sure how it works, when your photographer arrives, what they capture, or whether having a camera in the room will feel awkward. Birth photography is about so much more than the moment your baby is born — it’s about preserving the anticipation, the support, the strength, the tiny details, and the first moments you may be too emotional or overwhelmed to fully take in. In this post, I’ll walk you through what to expect when hiring an Austin birth photographer, from booking and the on-call process to delivery day and receiving your final gallery.

What is Birth Photography?

If this is your first baby, or simply your first time hiring a birth photographer, the term “birth photography” can feel a little unclear or misleading. Yes, I’m there to document the moment your baby is born, but I also capture so much more than that. Birth photography tells the full birth story: your labor, your baby’s arrival, and those first emotional moments after birth. For a deeper look at what birth photography actually includes, take a look at this blog post.

How the On-Call Process Works

Birth photography is different from a typical photography session because babies don’t arrive on a schedule. That’s why I’m on call 24/7 from the time you reach 37 weeks until your baby arrives.

Once you book, I’ll send you all the information you need about when and how to contact me once labor begins. As your due date gets closer, I’ll also check in periodically to see how you’re feeling and make sure you feel confident about when to reach out on birth day.

What to Expect When I Arrive at Your Birth

When I arrive, my goal is to quietly settle into the room and start documenting the birth story that’s already unfolding. I’m not there to direct, pose, or make the room feel like a photoshoot. I’m there to notice the real moments: the way your partner supports you, the way your doula helps you through contractions, the little details in the room, the anticipation before baby arrives, and of course, the moment you finally meet your baby.

Every family is different, so I’ll follow your lead. Whether you want me to stay tucked in the background doing my thing, or you’re the kind of person who wants to chat between contractions, I’ll match the energy of the room and respect what feels best for you. My hope is that when you look back on having me there during labor and delivery, it felt less like having a stranger with a camera in the room and more like having a trusted friend who made you feel safe, supported, and cared for.

Will Having a Birth Photographer Feel Awkward?

I totally get it… for some women, the thought of having a camera pointed at them during intimate moments can feel uncomfortable or daunting. But the most important thing to me is making sure you feel respected and comfortable the entire time.

Before birth, we’ll talk through preferences and boundaries so I know exactly what you are and aren’t comfortable with. Some Austin moms want everything documented, while others prefer a more modest approach that’s more focused on emotion and connection. And believe it or not, birth photography doesn’t ever have to include your private area if you don’t want it to!

What Happens After Baby Arrives?

It’s golden hour, and you’re in full baby bliss.

I’ll stay with you for about an hour after birth to capture all those brand-new firsts: skin-to-skin, feeding, baby’s exam, tiny details, and your first photos together as a family. These moments can feel like a beautiful blur, so my goal is to preserve the little pieces you may not even realize you’ll want to remember.

After I leave, I’ll do my best to send over a handful of sneak peeks within 24 hours, and you can expect your full birth photography gallery within the month.
