What to Wear for Maternity Photos in Austin, Texas (A Photographer's Complete Style Guide)
One of the first questions almost every maternity client asks me is, "What should I wear?" And honestly, it's a question I love!
The right outfit doesn't just look beautiful—it completely changes how your images feel. My goal is always to create maternity photos that feel editorial, timeless, and true to you, and choosing the right wardrobe is a huge part of that.
While my maternity photography style leans luxury editorial, these tips will help you choose outfits you'll still love years from now regardless of whether you're planning an in-home session, a studio maternity session, or an outdoor maternity session.
Start with Clothing That Makes You Feel Beautiful
The biggest mistake you can make when picking what to wear for your maternity photos is choosing an outfit simply because it's trendy. If it’s something you’d never wear, chances are you won’t feel confident, and it’ll show in your photos. So, start with something that makes you feel confident!
Choose pieces that feel like an elevated version of yourself instead of something you would never normally wear.
3 wardrobe tips I tell give all my clients
Here’s the fist thing I give my maternity clients when we first start discussing their outfits
1.Don't Be Afraid to Show Your Belly
Your growing belly is the reason we're here!
Whether that's a cropped knit sweater, a beautiful bralette, an unbuttoned blouse, or a two-piece set that shows just a little skin, let your bump become part of the outfit.
Showing your belly helps emphasize your pregnancy and creates a more editorial look while still feeling elegant.
2.Your Hands Are in More Photos Than You Think
During a maternity session, your hands naturally become part of the focus along side your belly.
Because they're featured so often, small details like simple rings, delicate bracelets, and fresh nails can make a surprisingly big difference without feeling distracting.
3.Texture Always Photographs Better Than Flat Fabrics
One of my favorite ways to elevate maternity photos is by incorporating textures into outfit choices.
Think linen, knit sweaters, gauze fabrics, eyelet cotton, ribbed materials, soft lace, or subtle embroidery. These fabrics add depth and interest without overwhelming the image.
The same goes for subtle patterns. Soft florals, delicate stripes, and understated prints can photograph beautifully.
** While I love color IRL, I typically recommend avoiding bright neon colors or solid black outfits for photos, since they cast unwanted tones onto your skin.
